Copper ore serves as the raw material for copper smelting. Copper ore can be divided into three categories:
⑴ Sulfide ores, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂), bornite (Cu₅FeS₄), and chalcocite (Cu₂S), among others.
⑵ Oxide ores, such as cuprite (Cu₂O), malachite [Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃], azurite [2CuCO₃·Cu(OH)₂], and chrysocolla (CuSiO₃·2H₂O), among others.
⑶ Native copper. Copper ores with a copper content of around 1% (0.5%–3%) are economically viable for mining, because flotation can be used to remove some of the gangue and other impurities from the ore, yielding a concentrate with a higher copper content (8%–35%).
